In 1939, Lieutenant-Commander George Ericson, obtaining served while in the Merchant Navy, was recruited towards the Royal Navy to consider command for the corvette, ‘Compass Rose’ for a war mission of huge benefits. His officers, also new towards the Navy, ended up entirely inexperienced while in the very harmful, but very important process assigned to them: escorting convoys of British merchant ships, carrying important supplies to Britian, from Canada along with the USA.
In spite of their shortcomings, the ‘Compass Rose’ and her crew embraced the hazardous mission with courage and assurance, crossing the Atlantic plenty of days, sometimes in atrocious weather, steering clear of the deadly German U-boats and protecting the important supplies for their besieged homeland.

Nicholas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool in 1910. Son of the distinguished surgeon, he graduated in law.Not keen topursue a legal job, he began composing in London, but thru his earlyreviews and journalistic attempts, he barely acquired by.
While towards war, he joined the Royal Navy Voluntary Reserve “to allow his nation win the battle” Recruited to command a corvette, he proceeded to present distinguished provider escorting ridethespot convoys of merchant ships with the Atlantic, bringing important supplies to Britain.

It had been there that he wrote his broadly acclaimednovel ‘The Kappillan of Malta’,a vivid portrayalof Malta’s sufferings and legendary resistance in the course of Environment War 11.
But it was ‘The Cruel Sea’ that proved his literary genius, successful for him the ‘Heinemann Groundwork Prize for Literature’ and making sure his legacy as a giant for the sea…along with the pen.
He passed away in 1979, and in deference to his needs, he was buried at sea with full Military Honours from a ship for the Royal Navy.
